Weissenstein to Aarau 2024
Nothing exceptional. A 2.5Hr XC flight on a decent day.
Difficult launch conditions but once in the air good lift. Issues with traffic and airspace but par for the course in Switzerland. Experimented with forcing Homer (at gunpoint) to collaborate in another crappy remix of mine. Edited in my usual 50% of the effort gets you 90% of the way style.

I needed a 5:1 glide ratio to clear terrian. What would I get from a 13.75m projected single skin with a flight weight of 76kh? This is a re-edit at the request of the peanut gallery that requested less fov.

A flight in late December here in Victoria Australia. Quite rough and thermic but the Lattice inspires confidence. I'm flying with an all up weight of about 75kg which is about 1/3 of the way up the weight range.

I forgot my powerbank so I only turned on my camera for the last hour of the flight. The first hour was harder work, but the last hour was easy as the day had developed and I was in the Zurich TMA with the higher step. More chances to stay on speedbar and enjoy the easy performance of the Lynx.

Nothing amazing, just a fun flight from Fiesch, a couple of hours of footage at 1000% speed with classic music track. The day before I had a minor operation and so I was feeling pretty sorry for myself but still traveled to Fiesch as part of a 3 day adventure planned ahead of time. The day was not that high with bases around 3000m and a Westerly influence. After a slow start it overdeveloped ea...

I've been flying the Lynx 2 Size S for a month now and I have a good feeling for it. I'm flying the wing with a Strike 1 harness in size Large. I weigh 67kg and my all up flying weight is between 80kg and 85kg. I have flown the wing in some very rough air and it is definitely much calmer than the Volt 4. The Volt 4 is a fantastic wing, but for me it becomes too snakey in turbulence and I don't ...

Airdesign Volt 4 EN-C 2 Liner, my thoughts after 5 flights....
Thanks for this video!I'm seriously considering getting this harness. I sat in an RXA-3 and it didn't fit my body geometry, partly because it doesn't have a seat board. I understand that the seat board makes things more tippy and more weight shifty, but it also prevents the harness from compressing my hips which is painful to my 68-year-old body. Question: have you flown this harness with the optional seat board? Another question: how far up the back does the inflatable protection go? One thing I really did like about the RXA3, was the back protection went way up the back. Yet another question: where are the fairing inflation ports? On the RXA3, there is only one port on the left side and it's possible to block that port with your arm, resulting in a flappy fairing. By the way, I currently fly the Sub Air Delight 4 and I find it to be extremely comfortable albeit quite a tank. I'm looking to move down a size and go with a much lighter hiking kit. I'm currently flying the photon, and will be getting the photon lyght in a few days I need to decide whether to get the medium large or the medium small. If I get the medium large, I'll stick with my D4, but I'd like to get the medium small and really try to lighten things up and have much more pleasant hikes.
Ok, many questions. So firstly it is several months later and I still love this harness. It is very comfortable and I find it easy and reliable to use. Regarding the inlet ports, it has one on each side and the tail always inflates perfectly. As soon as you drop into hang for a landing it deflates. I can't talk about the BF seat board, but I made my own from an old cross country ski and it is only about 5cm wide , but adds a little extra weighshift without affecting the comfort. finally the back protector starts at the things and goes all the way up the back, I feel like I am sitting in a racing seat it adds stability and comfort and I think ti should offer a lot of protection.
@@hangflyer thanks for the prompt reply! I am exchanging emails with bugdan and hopefully I can figure out all the details. It's somewhat complicates things being in Texas USA. I also need to make sure that he'll accept a return if I get it and I find that it's not comfortable for me. I suspect there might be a little bit of a language problem, because several other people that have made inquiries receive the same form letter.
Nice flight Rolf, and a couple of low saves!! Well done!!

Really nice footage Rolf.
hi.. can you send me some fotos, please, of your VG system and pulleys, becayse i try to fix my VG of C4 and somethink dosnt work well .? thanks..
Sorry I have sold the wing, but you can download the manual here: www.delta-club-82.com/bible/manuels/c4.pdf
@@hangflyer manual has nothing about VG... thanks man..
Would it make sense to jump from a low-B (BGD) to this low-C wing, with average 50h per season in the alps? ..or is it better to go to a high-B instead?
I think less than 100hrs a year and you should fly a high B. C is a small jump in performance, but a big increase in workload and a loss of passive safety.
@hangflyer ...this makes sense. Thanks!
My only issue is resale value
Peanut gallery would like to know how tricky it is to clear a terrian with a wing. Are terrians particularly dangerous? And if you travel at 76kilohours, is that a time/weight shift? Do you land lighter than when you took off?
Always good to see your videos Rolf!
Hello :) Good flight. What was your take-off weight? is there a track log?
Takeoff weight 76kg. Track log here: www.xcontest.org/australia/flights/detail:hangflyer/4.5.2024/03:29#fd=flight
Do you recommend for someone comes from high B like rush six?
If you have good active flying skills and are a confident pilot. It is a mid C wing and has high demands in rough air. You might want to consider something like the BGD Lynx 2 which has similar performance but is much less work.
@@hangflyer Thanks for the answer. I will consider it
@@mikehopemar My suggestion is to try and test fly any wing in rough air. If you enjoy it and feel safe, that is a good wing for you!
@@hangflyer I would love to, but honestly, no opportunity to do so!
Lg
How do you mount the camera on the Strike 1?
I use a insta 360 telescopic stick mount and I put it into the water bladder pocket and let it stick up through the hole for the water tube. This has the advantage that I can reach behind me to turn the camera on and off and also to extend the pole. For safety I usually take off with it just above the top of the harness and then pull it up higher in flight. I push it back down again before landing in string winds so it can't foul the lines when I turn around. I also tie the bottom of the stick to the bladder or harness so it can't come out in flight.
@@hangflyer Thanks! That's a great method I hadn't thought of that. Isn't is very hard to turn back behind yourself though?
@@turkeyphantYou just reach back behind yourself. If you put the camera on a angle so that it is off to one side it is super easy to reach.
You mad chook! 🤣 Love it.
nice flight. whats your starting weight here to have a thermal flight on a size xs?
About 76kg
Thanks for the review! I have to say that the amout and the layout of the lines on the BF seem a bit messy and overwhelming to me, but I guess it all makes sense after reading a manual. Interesting points on the Strike. None of the reviews I've seen mentioned that it has the tendency to tip over so much during collapses (well..maybe that's only the case when paired with a high AR wing).
I have the same total in flight weight (about 74kg) Would you have considered going for the size 14?
I'm sure the 14 would have a similar glide ratio and be about 5kph faster. But it would be super hard to thermal because of the speed and the increased sink rate when turning. If you just want a wing for ridge soaring or short descents the 14 would be fine. I wanted something light with a small pack volume that would still climb in thermals so that I can get over terrain. I considered the large wing as the weight of all is close but chose this wing mainly for the pack volume.
@@hangflyer Thanks for the detailed answer, it looks like the 16 is a good compromise overall 👍
I love the happy sound of The wind in the lines because if you start to go into a spiral dive all of a sudden it'll start getting uglier in in about 4 seconds it'll be screaming at you.
Thanks for sharing your first impressions! Happy to see that the lattice delivers 🔥 Another demonstration that aspect ratio on single skins is more accessible skill-wise than on a regular ram-air. According to my experiments the real "concern" of small surface high aspect single skin is rather the easy stall behavior. The lattice however is still in the safe zone with its AR just below 6.0. Things start to get a little more dicey above 7.0 😅 Can't wait to see more of this one!
You have made such a beautiful wing. I can't wait to hear more from you about the Stork.
Get a different camera. Its dizzying to watch this. Its difficult to watch. Erratic. I tried. Your not there yet. I see stuff I do like. change some things up. I respect what your doing. loosen up your narrative. Its fun, now you be fun.
This is the first time I tried using the insta360 on a helmet mount. I did this because I was not yet sure how I could mount the camera behind me like I usually do. I agree the view sucks and I have figured out how to mount the camera on the end of a stick with the string harness now so the next video will be the usual format.
Thanks for the review! Looking forward to more information soon
Thanks. I'm collecting footage at the moment, hope to have another video up with more details on the performance soon.
Great review buddy. Nicely put together 👌
Thanks! It is my usual style, I'm not big on production or stye but you get my honest point of view. I'm collecting more footage from more flights and it will be interesting to see how it handles turbulence and some mild acro etc.
Hey Rolf, nice review! Shame there’s not a hang glider that packs up that small. Looking forward to flying together again sometime!
Hi Dave, I have your Falcon 145 here and it comes with the WW short pack box. That is as small and light as an HG gets! I hope you get over here to collect your Falcon and we can fly together then!
Beautiful!
I can like that you're still alive and flying, but those views are pretty ordinary
epic flight. what side of feathertop did you launch from ?
The West side.
Cheers! Do you remember how strong the wind was? Did you hit any thermals? What wing are you on ? @@hangflyer
@@aymaynardIt was light and variable winds on the day, no thermals. I think it would be tough to get over the ridge in front with more than a 10kph headwind. I'll be back with a single surface soon and counting on some thermals to help me improve my glide! I was flying a PHI Maestro X-Alps 18 in this video.
@@hangflyercheers for the response
WOW - that's a lot of weight on the wing, but pretty cool!
What is the price?
I bought the harness in Australia a few years ago and it was under a thousand dollars then. I imagine that like everything it is more now, but you would have to ask Woody Valley for a current price.
Very nice video and astonish editing.👍🏻
Hey mate. Thanks for the review, I am about to order this harness. You mentioned you had trouble with the sizing, any gotchas to bear in mind?
The harness has removable foam plates under your feet that allow you adjust the length slightly so as long as the overall length is close you can adjust it and still get a good fit when wearing more clothes of bulky shoes. Just make sure you give them your exact height and don't add anything on to allow for room, WV will work it out for you.
Not ten thousand feet ASL, but it sounds cooler. Did not watch the vid.
True it is closer to 9000ft amsl, but the pressure altitude on the day was over 10,000ft ;-)
Great video! I randomly came across this as I'm heading back by train from Weissenstein;) We met today! I was the guy with the base 2😂 What a coincidence! How was your flight?
I turned left because everyone else turned right and I like my space. Then I was just climbing in a nice thermal and a kamikaze pilot flew straight at me and made me leave the thermal to make room for him. After that I never found a decent climb again and ended up bombing out. I went back up but when I got to launch it was a brisk SW on the flag and the take-off was in rotor with the trees out front moving too much. I waited an hour and then decided to go home. I see the day got better later and you had a great flight, so well done!
Oh no sry to hear that! But conditions weren't great anyways... Was more fighting than enjoying.... even later in the day it was super weak and hard to center:/ see you around!
Nice
Thanks! Seems like the ideal progress wing after my maestro x alps for when i will have more time for flying.
I think so. You should also try the Allegro XAlps as it is a very nice wing too if you can find a sweet spot on the weight range.
so i am flying maestro x alps now, and this video and other reviews are screaming all the same: buy a Volt 4! :D
After 100hrs on the Volt I have now sold it. The wing is fantastic in nice air or moderately rough air. But in very turbulent air the workload is probably 4x the Maestro and the wing becomes quite snaky. It is not a safety issue as the wing is rock solid, but from a comfort point of view I don't like the way it moves around. I am the first to say this is a personal feeling I have and other pilots don't feel this way. I would recommend test flying the Volt in turbulent air to see how you find it.
@@hangflyer Maybe u flew in very turbulent air which u didnt so before? I guess you also fly the Maestro X Alps, and from my opinion this is a wing that moves a lot and especially in turbulent air is not fun anymore. How can the Volt be worse than that?
@@svetre87 The difference is that the Maestro (and the Lynx) are just one wing in turbulent air, the Volt 4 becomes like 2 halves of a snaky wing. It is manageable, but I find it too high a workload to be fun. In calm air it is about 30% more work that the Maestro, but in very rough air it feels like 3x the work to me. Just my opinion, fly the wing yourself in big air to know how you will feel about it.
Well done.😊
Hiya! Is there a chance to get your review of the Supair strike ? I have upgraded to my first pod this season (lightness 2) but I'm finding it wobbly (I know, understandable after coming from a seat board harness). I am curious if the mini seat board in the Strike makes a difference when comparing to a hammock style Lightness2. Is there more authority with the weight shift? Also, what size are you and which size harness are you flying ? Any feedback much appreciated! Thanks !
Hi, I am flying the Strike in Large Size, I am about 180cm tall and weigh about 70kg. The harness has a removable seat board. With the seat board in you have great control for weight shift, but if you have a wing that depressurizes on one side (like the Volt 4) you get tipped to the side a lot. If I remove the seatboard it becomes more like a hammock harness where you have less weightshift authority, but you also get tipped less as you are now hanging lower. I have had no issues with side to side wobble once I got the harness straps adjusted correctly. I put the airbag from the Strike 2 into the Strike one and it is a perfect harness for me. Comfortable, light weight, lots of storage, packs up small. I have flown 500+ hours with my harness and it is still in great condition.
Hey Rolf, great to see you’re getting some air time in Oz … in winter!
Super cool rolf. Ur such an adventurer and so inspiring. Great editing and soundtrack too 😉
Thanks for the kind words! I'm getting ready for a summer of adventures in the Alps! Fly Safe.
Nice job man!! Thank you for sharing!! How do you overlay XC on the video?
The simple way is to use the replay function in XCTrack to replay the flight from the stored IGC file. Then record the android device screen as a video. Then overlay the video on your other footage and use Chroma Key to make the background transparent. I use ADB to record the video and save it to my desktop, but there are dedicated apps for recording your Android screen. I use Kdenlive video editor as it is powerful and free.
@@hangflyer how kind of you to take the time to answer. It is Chinese to me but I have a friend who is a computer genius (like you) and may be able to help me out. Thank you so much and happy flights!!
Nice flight Rolf… with a couple of good saves (and no collapses)!
Hey Rolf, there’s always time to go back to HG!
I would say you didnt start😂
Looks like great flying conditions. Spectacular collapse @ 2:37 with a good save very close to the ground.
That was Charlie on a Delta, it's a good reminder to maintain minimum recovery height on days like this.
impressive!
Golden information in this video. I'm going to buy a libero. Loving the channel ❤️
I think you will love the harness, it's super easy to live with and comfortable on long XC flights. Cool you are learning to fly HG, I seem to fly more and more PG these days but love every form of free flying.
Nice, I'm doing my PG2 course in Manilla in may, I can't wait to fly. Do you use an external vario paired with your phone or are you just using the app?
I use the barometer in the phone for the 10 second average and I use a skydrop as my main fast response vario. I don't use bluetooth as the phone gps and baro work well enough on my galaxy phones.
@@hangflyer awesome, thanks for the reply. I'm only just getting started but I'm trying to get as much information as possible from everywhere I can, I'm going for my PG2 in May, my ultimate goal is XC.
Very good review, thanks a lot for all the information and hints.
I would actually watch your content if you would not load that stupid music....
Sorry you don't like the music. That is what I like to listen to. I suppose you could turn the volume down and play your own music as I am never going to add music I don't like myself!.
Mate each to his own but just a word of advice: Maybe just let the vario sing. I am sure you will gain more views. I love my Volt and footage is hard to find.
We could do with more videos like that. Great, measured commentary with lots of detail.
